Spousal Support & Alimony in St. Louis

Spousal Support & Alimony, also known as Spousal Maintenance or Alimony, is a set monthly payment made by one spouse to the other to help provide for his or her living expenses.

Spousal support is not guaranteed in Missouri, but is at the court’s discretion.

Judges can award open-ended support, where the payments continue until either party dies or the recipient remarries, or limited duration support, where payments are limited to a specific end date.

Contractual support cannot be ordered by a judge, but is determined time period and payment amounts are agreed upon between parties.

While alimony is not required in Missouri, spouses are still entitled to seek it.

The courts will consider factors including age, financial resources, duration of the marriage, conduct during the marriage, earning capacity, and more, to determine the spouse seeking maintenance’s ability to provide for his or her reasonable needs.
